Substance misuse and addiction

What is substance misuse?

Substance misuse refers to the use of alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription medications and other substances that are not drugs (e.g. petrol and glue) in a way that is harmful to yourself or others around you. People use substances for many reasons – e.g. to relax, have fun, dull emotional or physical pain, or to avoid problems and painful memories. The misuse of substances can lead to a dependence on the substance to cope, and may develop into a substance use disorder (addiction).

It is estimated that 1 in 20 Australians struggle with substance use problems. The most commonly used substances in Australia are alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine and methamphetamines.

Getting help for substance misuse

Recovery from substance use problems and addiction is possible. The good news is there are many treatment options available. Mild difficulties with substance use can be treated by working with a therapist and making lifestyle changes. Severe difficulties may require treatment in a hospital or rehabilitation centre.

The first step towards recovery from substance use is an assessment and an open discussion about your motivation to change and treatment options. We recommend having a discussion with your GP or completing our free online assessment.
